                                                  Abstract

This paper presents a novel approach to measure rail-to-ground resistance
for the negative rails of transit lines after revenue service. Using the Wen-
Hu Line(Brown Line) as the study case. It is observed that no appropriate
approach is available from technical literatures or international standards to
suit the circuit configuration of continuous negative rail and earthed condition
when revenue service stop. The proposed method uses synchronous negative
rail potential measurements generated by train traction currents to obtain
data for rail-to-ground resistance calculation, which can achieve substantial
negative rail potential values and hence numerical data of good quality. Field
data from the Brown Line show that the proposed method can be used to
routinely examine rail-to-ground resistances for transit line in revenue service.
