                                                       Abstract
Taipei MRT Nangang eastern extension Phase 1, from Kunyang Station to Nangang Station, is

scheduled to open for commercial service by the end of 2008. The trackwork is a major part of MRT
contruction projects and also plays a critical role in determining if the project will be completed
successfully and begin operation on time. The trackwork for the Nangang eastern extension only
began in Aug. 2007. Restricted by limited time and a complicated construction site, where the

construction of the main structure and cut and cover section (including double crossover, departure
and arrival work shaft) are ongoing concurrently, the responsible engineers have been making
great endeavors to push construction forward to meet the completion target date and then hand
over the project to the Electrical and Mechanical contractor in accordance with the stipulations of

the contract. Under high pressure due to the limited construction period of only seven months, the
engineers have virtually created the chance to advance revenue service and also provided high-
quality MRT construction for the citizens of Taipei City.
Owing to a lack of manpower and equipment, a delayed construction start and the urgency

of the work schedule, the contractor subcontracted the trackwork and relevant work to a fully
experienced contractor who was previously commissioned to implement the trackwork of the
Tucheng line. The subcontractor first made improvements to construction equipment and facilities
based on the construction characteristics, so as to promote work efficiencies and shorten the

construction period. With well-arranged construction planning, full implementation, and well-
utilized manpower the trackwork was carried out at full speed and completed on schedule. During
the whole process of construction, the trackwork subcontractor pushed the work forward in a very
positive manner, broke through traditional construction method constraints and created a number

of benefits for this project. Therefore, it is expected that the successful experience of trackwork of
Nangang eastern extension will be applied in future MRT line construction and result in enhanced
            service quality for Taipei's citizens.
