                                              ABSTRACT

During the Taichung Metro Green Line trial operation period, on November 21,
2020, there is 1 trainset found that the shaft of the semi-permanent coupler draft
gear was broken. Therefore, the trial operation was suspended, and a complete
incident investigation, analysis and improvement work were carried out. The main
root cause for the failure is that some of the draft gears are not properly assembled,
resulting in the fracture of the shaft. Considering the maintenance of the operating
company in the future and avoiding the risk caused by human error, the upgraded
design of shaft is carried out on the premise of prudence. Upgraded shaft conduct a
complete fatigue analysis to ensure sufficient fatigue strength of the shaft. And
carry out a number of component design verification tests, including fatigue tensile,
static tensile/ compression and fatigue bending moment tests, to ensure that the
upgraded shaft can fully meet the design requirements. Taichung Metro Green Line
conducts a comprehensive design review and complete validation of the shaft to
ensure that the upgraded shaft can fully meet the design requirements. The integrity
and rigor of design and verification surpasses other projects, and can be used as a
reference for other projects during the design stage.
