Reflecting on Over a Quarter Century of the Taipei MRT
Impact on Transportation and Establishment of a Modern Transit System

Abstract
This article reflects on Taipei MRT's achievements over the past 25 years (1987~). The authors

discuss Taipei MRT’s influences throughout the Taipei metropolitan area, evolution of intangible
project values, missions of the modern transit system, and a preliminary study of MRT culture.
Serving as a commemoration, the article not only praises the accomplishments achieved over the
past quarter century but also is an inspiration for future MRT projects. Taipei MRT’s close relation
to everyday life has led to tremendous impacts and a variety of changes to the city during periods of
construction and operation. It has transformed the urban landscape, influencing the people and the
city in both perceptible and imperceptible ways. These changes and the growth they bring continue

as MRT construction further expands the network.
Looking closely at the growth and changes caused by Taipei MRT, we realize the value brought
to the city. Through tracing the impact of Taipei MRT and rethinking the MRT values over the past
25 years, we hope to inspire a new way of thinking among the Taipei MRT team to achieve three
new, modern visions-Transit Oriented Development (TOD), Green MRT, and MRT Culture-
during the next stage of construction. Through collaboration, we can then form innovative
perspectives and leave a valuable legacy for our successors.
