The New Step’s Automatic Fare Collection
System

Abstract
The planning and design of the present Automatic Fare Collection system for Taipei Rapid
Transit system follows ideas suggested by foreign consultants such as magnetic ticket system,
automatic gates, and automatic ticket issued machines that use a push button menu, etc. However,
after the TRTS, buses and public parking lots decided to choose electric tickets(Easycard only)as
the fare collection system, system compatibility problems have led to inefficient management,
operation and maintenance of the system.
To improve the sustainable management of TRTS and in the spirit of the pursuit of excellence,
we have redesigned the automatic fare collection system while inviting bids for the Neihu,
Xinzhuang, and Luzhou lines and updating the system used on the lines already in operation.
The items to be updated in the next generation automatic fare collection system are as follows:
The ticket system will change to contactless electric tickets(including easy cards, IC tokens for
single journey tickets and IC paper tickets); the upload and download of data and commands shall
consist of one system; automatic gates will be changed to a flap door system; the automatic gates
will use optical sensors to control entry/exit; automatic ticket issuing machines will change to touch
screens and accept bills; an RFID system will be included in the automatic ticket issuing machine
with a module for counting cash; The microprocessor design of each machine shall be PC based; the
station computers will change to industrial class PCs; the functions of and management of the
Easycard system will be extended(it should include registered student tickets and tour passport
tickets, enquiry machines connected to an upper level system, passenger agent machines that can
enquire Easycard data from other companies, functions that monitor defrauding behavior.)
We will present the next generation automatic fare collection system this year. This article
describes detailed features of the automatic fare collection system so that residents in Taipei can
understand what the system in advance.
