                                                       Abstract

Precast concrete segments which are 25 cm in thickness have been adopted for the bored
tunnels of Taiwan’s MRT system. In some special tunnel boring cases, such as in close-spaced
tunnels, tunnels passing underneath existing buildings, and cross-passage excavations, additional
earth pressure and deformation caused by ground disturbances and stress release may act against
the lining segments, accordingly, the asymmetrical pressure results in non-uniform deformation and

cracks on the concrete segments. The spherical graphite cast iron segment (or ductile segments)
demonstrates higher strength and better anti-deformation features than the concrete segment, and
it has better durability, anti-corrosion, and manufacturing accuracy when compared with the steel
segment, thus it has been introduced to the tunnel industry in Taiwan. This paper first provides a
briefing on the material characteristics, structural conformation, design methodology, casting, and
inspection procedures for the ductile segments. It then illustrates the case study of close-spaced
tunnels for the Songshan line where ductile segments were first adopted in the Taipei MRT projects,
including analysis and design, construction planning, and monitoring feedback. It also provides
references for similar projects in the future.
