                                                       Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between underground stations and
urban living based on the Taipei MRT Luzhou line. Using “public art” as a creative starting point
coupled with existing characteristics of natural environment and historic features of the area, the
selected station design theme is “Recalling Luzhou’s Past.” In addition, each design lot has its
own sub-themes—“Green, Wind, Water, Reed, Sand, and Garden” applied to both building form
and interior decoration of each underground station. Thus, the design not only presents a common
value that integrates the entire Luzhou line, at the same time it creates a unique identity for each
station, and enhances the quality of urban space.
The result of these efforts in forming a special relationship not only helps passengers capture
historic moments and memories which have taken place directly above on the ground, but also
provides a pleasing scenery and sense of orientation to the respective urban areas which otherwise
may be hard to grasp while walking around an underground station. Finally, to demonstrate the
concept and agglomerate a common consensus among the neighboring residents beforehand,
a major effort was made to reach out to the public via close cooperation and communication,
including the presentation of simulated reality films to display the benefits of the project so as to
placate any doubts or fears and provide a smooth and efficient construction environment.

Keywords: public art, urban space, station, form
