earlier stages through BIM models which are collated from all disciplines involved in the building
process.
Experience also tells us that solving errors or conflicts on-site incurs massive costs, but
with BIM this cost issue can be significantly reduced. Digital 3D data in Finite Element Analysis
(FEA) software has been applied much earlier in the structural engineering industry field in
Taiwan. However it is unlike BIM because BIM relates not only to 3D data but also includes other
mandatory elements from different disciplines. As an ISO standard, the IFC format of the OPEN
BIM, has been approved and recognized as one of the most successful ways of exchanging BIM
data among various disciplines. Tekla Corporation, established in Finland in 1966, is one of the most
successful BIM software companies. Tekla integrates design, fabrication, and visual management of
steel and concrete structures into its world famous BIM software - Tekla Structures. Tekla has also
developed Tekla BIMsight which has been widely used all over the world as an effective BIM data
platform to import data using IFC and other formats from different disciplines to review, check, and
detect clashes, enabling effective collaboration. This paper introduces several domestic and foreign
projects that have successfully used Tekla Structures and Tekla BIMsight as BIM tools.
