(Computer Aided
Building Information Modeling

An Overview of the BIM Software Platform and
                                       Implementation Suggestions

                                                         1
                                       Chen Yu-Tsung Tien Hung-Chun 2
                                                       Abstract
At one time, differences in the industrial environment caused the computer-aided design (CAD)
applications of the building and construction industry, especially application depth and prevalence
rate of 3D CAD, to lag behind manufacturing industries by as much as 15 to 20 years. As early as
2002, Phil Bernstein, Autodesk vice president of Building Information Modeling (BIM), presented
a design concept for the building and construction industry. However, BIM was not popular among
related industries in Taiwan during the ten years from 2002 to 2012.
It was not until 2010 that DORTS followed the global trend to pursue energy-saving, lower
carbon emissions, green energy, and efficiency, and took the initiative to incorporate BIM into
contract specifications. Meanwhile, a number of factors such as the substantial cost decline of IT
hardware (hard drives and memory), innovation of stable 64-bit operating systems, increase of
64-bit software, etc. have stimulated curiosity over BIM and made it all the rage in the domestic
            construction industry.
Based on the single database concept, BIM develops various value-added applications to help
optimize management throughout the entire life cycle of a building. As BIM involves every phase
of a building´s life cycle, BIM-related software applications are multifarious, making it easy for a
BIM novice to become very confused. In this paper, the authors compile four kinds of BIM-related
software for beginners and also made suggestions about how to implement BIM, hoping that they
can gain a quick understanding of the concepts and application of BIM for short term purposes.
The long-term prospect is to achieve energy saving and waste reduction (including major wastage
due to errors) by sharing and implementing BIM ideas with a hope to create more green buildings,
and make an effort to move the architectural industry and civil works in Taiwan toward sustainable
development while also maintaining international competitiveness.
