Shield Tunnel Excavation Management and Alignment Correction

Abstract
Having accumulated 200 years of experiences and evolutions, excavation technology
of shield tunnel construction is quite mature but uncertainty and risks still exist. To perform
successful excavation, further study of technology enhancement and obstacle breakthrough
are necessary, such as the skill of instructing excavation management. In the past, excavation
management instruction was conducted by foreign engineers for a long time; while in recent
years domestic engineers began to get involved. But concerns such as whether related
technology is sufficiently mature, are their skills are sufficient, and have they prepared
sufficiently (e.g. Do they have modular teaching materials? Is there a training curriculum and
management succession?) are worthy of further review and work.
This article is an overview of related tunneling management that focuses on two topics.
First, an introduction of shield tunnel drilling alignment control and the use of tapered
segments. Second, an instruction book issued regarding practical tunneling operations. In
regard to practical management methods in starting the shield tunneling machine, for those
who have the inclination to improve their skill, this thesis discusses streamlining key shield
tunneling technical and management quality.
