Current Status and Perspectives of Railway

Engineering Consultancy in Taiwan

Abstract

The railway transportation system was first introduced into Taiwan in 1885. However, active
development of railway engineering in Taiwan only began with the Taipei MRT and Taipei Railway
Underground projects in 80’. These projects led domestic engineering consultants to a new

milestone – railway engineering consultancy. As the development of consultancy is closely linked
to that of the national infrastructures, this paper will first give a summary description of the rail
transit networks and projects in Taiwan, and then focus on the technical issues of railway
engineering consultancy, as well as the discussion of technical and market development in the

future.
