What can Taipei MRT learn from the Barcelona subway experience

Abstract
Crowded population, high density buildings and narrow roads are the main characteristics
of Taipei city. Thus the MRT system was introduced to provide fast and convenient public
transportation and solved the traffic problems in the same time. The underground and elevated
MRT constructions are good options since the space on the ground is limited. However, people
live in Taipei prefer underground MRT rather than elevated one from the landscape point of
view. That was why Taipei MRT always designed underground routes as the first priority while
the economic condition was appropriate. Tunnels and underground stations were built under
main roads or boulevards of Taipei at the first stage of Taipei MRT. They were mainly designed
base on the planning manual with few restrictions. With limited road width and transfer
efficiency consideration with current stations, new planning concepts should be adopted to
design better routes, operation patterns, and reduce traffic or environment impact in the future
network. The brand-new design and automatic operation patterns of route 9th at Barcelona is
introduced in this article. We hope the feedback will be helpful to the future network of Taipei
MRT.
