Recollections of the Construction of the Xinzhuang Line Taipei City Section--
Stories of E&M Systems
Thanks to the hard work of all construction crews, the Xinzhuang line Taipei City section
was finally opened for commercial service after the crews had overcome many obstacles and
difficulties. Being able to provide the public with convenient and comfortable transportation
facilities is the source of great pride for all behind-the-scenes crew members.
Electrical and mechanical (E&M) engineering work is a key part of MRT construction.
It includes electrical multiple units (EMUs), the signaling system, power supply system,
communication system, elevator and escalator systems, automatic fare collection system, depot
facilities, etc. As Mr. Hu Li-zhi, an engineer working in the Communication Site Office said,
“You don’t feel its existence when it works regularly. However, once it shuts down, the whole
MRT system stops working.” The quote describes how sophisticated and crucial the E&M
systems are. Completion of related interfaces, construction, and testing take a lot of work that
depends on a group of professional and careful engineers working to a precise master plan.
Completion of civil engineering work will be followed by installation, testing, integration
and handover of the E&M facilities. This work is performed at the last stage of MRT
construction. One special difficulty is that construction crews have to conduct on-field testing
in shifts at night after regular service time prior to operation. The hard times they have gone
through are indescribable. In this article, the frontline engineers would like to share their joys
and pains with us.
