                                                       Abstract
Due to limited space, the construction of the Luzhou line’s Sanchong Elementary School
Station applied a “cut-back building size” design concept to reduce potential negative impacts on a
neighboring school and residences. A reduction in the Right of Way caused a re-arrangement of the
station’s inner spaces, not only reducing the area and depth of excavation, but also integrating all

of the entrances and vent shafts into a single structure. Consequently, this case established a study
model for both utilizing the smallest site area while still fulfilling all functional requirements of the
             MRT system.

In view of the complex nature of combining underground station spaces, the concept of
“Interface Integration” was applied as an effective tool in checking for any conflicts between the
Electrical & Mechanical Engineering (E&M) systems and the structure. A review of the designs
using the “Value Engineering” procedure was carried out at the beginning so as to provide design
alternatives, which not only reduced overall construction expenses but also upgraded the quality of

             urban space.
