                                                       Abstract

After geological investigations revealed that the area where the Neihu MRT line was to be

constructed had large variations in rock stratum, in addition to an intricate array of utility laid
underground, as well as the problems of soft compressible soil covering creating potentially
unstable excavation well walls, completely encased pipe pile foundations were adopted for the
viaduct construction. The construction of the completely encased pipe pile foundations begins by

putting a steel column into the ground using boring machine, and the combined use of bumper
grab, helical auger or bucket to excavate. While drilling the ground, solid steel columns are used
all the way to serve as protection for the holes.
