Fatigue Loading Test of of Precast Prestressed Pier Caps and
U-Shaped Girders on the Neihu MRT Line’s Elevated Construction

Abstract
With a view to saving time and reducing the impact on traffic, the construction method used
on the Neihu MRT line adopted the precast method, in contrast to the Muzha line and Danshui line,
to manufacture the cap beam of the viaduct.
The construction combines precast pier caps with cast-in-place piers. Steel plates and H-beam
are embedded onto pier columns and connected with shear studs. When the pier caps are craned
and connected to the columns, semi-permeable welding will be conducted in combination with the
slotting method to hold the connected steel plates firmly in place.
The construction combining precast pier caps with cast-in-place piers is one of the most
critical parts of the viaduct construction, and paves the way for the successful construction of the
elevated section of the Neihu line.
