Advanced Thoughts of the Modern Station

                                Design for Rapid Transit System

                                                        Chao-Ting Chiu

A rapid transit system involves the combination of different engineering fields, such as civil
engineering, tunnels & viaducts, and also track & electrical engineering etc.
The system itself appears to be the symbol of modernization. Due to the convenience,
efficiency and comfort user can obtain from the MRT service, the system enhances, the urban-life
quality and the competitiveness of the city. Therefore, major cities around the globe have earnestly
built MRT systems one after another regardless of the high costs. Station design of rapid transit
systems show various styles caused by the evolation of different cultures and contemporary trends
as well as the developments of new materials and techniques. Hence, station design becomes one of

the most important elements which may represent the cities’ own characters and unique tastes. It
has been almost a decade since the first opening of the initial network of the Taipei MRT, therefore
with the essence of the modern design in mind, the author would like to evaluate the contrasts
between the designs and the practical functions, and also to provide viewpionts to some issues as a
reference for the subsequent station design.
