                                                             Abstract

Several Taipei MRT lines, currently in operation, are not equipped with Platform Screen Doors
PSDs in stations, including, Danshui, Xindian, Zhonghe, Banqiao, Nanqang, Xiaonanmen,
Xinbeitou and Xiaobitan branch lines. Muzha Line is the only one equipped with PSDs in its
stations since operation began. To provide a more safe and comfortable environment for passengers

in station waiting zones, successive Taipei MRT lines will be equipped with PSDs in their
underground stations, including Xinzhuang, Luzhou, Xinyi and Songshang lines. Among them, the
Xinzhuang and Luzhou lines are under construction, and the Xinyi and Songshang lines are still in

                   the design stage.
“Is it necessary to retrofit PSDs in currently operating Taipei MRT stations?” It remains a
debatable issue. Currently, most MRT operating lines worldwide are not equipped with PSDs in
their stations, and is seldom the case that new PSDs are retrofitted in existing stations. Thus, it is
essential to have a technical study before retrofitting PSDs on Taipei MRT systems. A technical

study, concentrated on difficulty analysis, has to be taken account of all the current elevated,
underground and at-grade stations. Furthermore the facility layouts and E&M equipment
arrangements in existing stations have to be investigated and explored in order to recommend

suitable types of PSDs for Taipei MRT operating stations. In addition to the technical study on
difficulty analysis, we also refer to an investigation report from TRTC subject on the necessity of
retrofitting PSDs. The investigation report mainly shows the public approval ratings from Taipei
                   MRT passengers on this subject.
The content of this report includes overview of the functionality and types of PSDs,

technical study of difficulty analysis on underground stations, evaluation results on types of PSDs
selection for underground stations, evaluation results on types of PSDs selection for elevated and
at-grade stations, comments from the TRTC investigation report on the necessity of retrofitting

PSDs, and conclusions & suggestions of this study.
